There is a great deal of information as well as misinformation
out there regarding hair loss. In order to determine which
solution is right for you, it is helpful to understand
what causes hair loss in the first place.
First of all, understand that
there is a tremendous difference between hair loss and hair fall. Of
course, hair fall is normal. It occurs daily, and is necessary for the
regeneration of hair. We lose a certain quantity of hair every day.
Each hair has a life cycle, and is genetically programmed to grow,
fall out, and re-grow.
However, the problem lies in the hair’s re-growth. In general, 85%
of all our hairs grow approximately 1/2" to 3/4" inch per month, and grows
for approximately two to six years, depending on where it is located on
one’s head. This stage is called the ANAGEN stage.
At the end of the growth stage, 15% of our hairs are in a state of
growth deceleration and cessation, or otherwise known as the CATAGEN
stage. About 50 to 100 hairs fall out each day, where the majority
of which will re-grow, because the follicle (the root) remains.
Since a person’s head contains approximately 100,000 hairs, the
quantity of hair-fall is negligible. A new hair will replace the old
one after a short rest phase, and the life cycle repeats itself.
This is called the TELOGEN phase.
In the scientific world, the most common
cause of hair loss is androgenic, since it affects 95% of men and
women suffering hair loss – commonly referred to as
Male-Pattern-Baldness. In most cases, it is caused by a genetic
predisposition, which is affected primarily by male hormones, while
others are brought on by external influences. While only the top of
a man’s head is affected, women suffer a more diffuse thinning
throughout the entire scalp.
In cases where hair loss is hereditary, genes in certain hair
follicles cause them to die. That is, the genetic programming of a
hair follicle causes it to be hypersensitive to male hormones. When
hair falls out, hormones get in contact with the follicle and
temporarily paralyses it, which allow fatty deposits and cellular
debris, which prevents it from growing normally. As the life cycle
repeats itself, the hair progressively shrivels up and eventually
dies.
As for cases brought on by external causes, although they are many,
the most common ones are pregnancies, anemia, certain medications,
some weight-loss diets, hormonal deficiencies such as hyper-thyroidism,
and so on. At any rate, if loss can not be prevented, it is
certain that it can at least be reduced or slowed down as to avoid a
more excessive loss under normal conditions.
